2015 APA Division 5 Awards: Call for Nominations

Deadline, December 1: Division 5 is seeking nominations for five different awards that recognize outstanding accomplishment in the Division 5-related areas of quantitative and qualitative research methods, which include assessment, evaluation, measurement, statistics, and qualitative inquiry:

  • Samuel J. Messick Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions
  • Jacob Cohen Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Mentoring
  • Anne Anastasi Early Career Award
  • Anne Anastasi Distinguished Dissertation Award (Quantitative)
  • NEW: Distinguished Dissertation Award (Qualitative)

Individuals working in the area of qualitative methods are particularly encouraged to be nominated for the Messick, Cohen, and Early Career awards. As a new Section of Division 5, the Society for Qualitative Inquiry in Psychology (SQIP) has not previously been represented among the nominees for these awards. Members of SQIP will assist the Awards Committee in reviewing nominees for these awards and for the new Distinguished Dissertation Award (Qualitative).

Neither the nominator nor nominee need be a current or former member of either APA or Division 5. Both self-nominations and nominations of others will be considered. Specific materials required for each award are listed below.

Award recipients attending the 2015 APA convention will be honored at the Division 5 Awards Symposium where they will have the opportunity to make a presentation, and will receive a cash award of $500 to help offset travel expenses to the convention. In addition, all award recipients will receive an honorary one-year membership to Division 5, an awards plaque, and a place in history.

Please send all requested nomination materials by email to the Chair of the Awards Committee, Mark Daniel (mark.daniel@pearson.com), by December 1, 2014. Samuel J. Messick Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award

This award honors an individual who has a long and distinguished history of scientific contributions within the fields of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods.

Nomination materials should include:

  1. A nomination letter and two other letters of support that describe the relevance, magnitude, and breadth of the nominee’s scientific contributions to the fields of Division 5 throughout his/her career.
  2. A current curriculum vitae of the nominee.
  3. A list of the names, affiliations, email addresses, telephone numbers, and mailing addresses of the nominee, the nominator and those writing letters of support.

Jacob Cohen Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Mentoring

This award recognizes demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring within the fields of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods. Nominees at all stages of their career will be considered.

Nomination materials should include:

  1. A nomination letter and two other letters of support that describe distinguished teaching and mentoring through teaching evaluations, awards, or testimonials, the nominee’s impact on student career trajectories, and the nominee’s impact via public dissemination, such as workshops, conference presentations, books, web sites, or involvement in public media.
  2. A current curriculum vitae of the nominee.
  3. A list of the names, affiliations, email addresses, telephone numbers, and mailing addresses of the nominee, the nominator and those writing letters of support.

Anne Anastasi Early Career Award

This award recognizes an early career individual who has made outstanding contributions to quantitative and/or qualitative research methods and who shows promise of continued outstanding work. The contribution may be in academic, clinical, government, industry or other settings. To be eligible for the 2015 award, the nominee’s dissertation must have been completed in 2005 or later.

Nomination materials should include:

    1. A nomination letter and two other letters of support that describe the nominee’s major contributions. The letter should comment on the number and quality of publications, the impact of the nominee’s contributions as evidenced by citations, grants, leadership roles, policy involvement, and/or translation of theory to practice, and the nominee’s promise for future contributions to fields of Division 5.
    2. A current curriculum vitae of the nominee.
    3. A list of the names, affiliations, email addresses, telephone numbers, and mailing addresses of the nominee, the nominator and those writing letters of support.

Anne Anastasi Distinguished Dissertation Award (Quantitative) and Distinguished Dissertation Award (Qualitative)

These two awards recognize distinguished dissertations: one that addresses a topic in the field of quantitative research methods and one that addresses a topic in the field of qualitative research methods. A dissertation that addresses both a quantitative and a qualitative area may be nominated for both awards, but may win only one. To be eligible for one of the two 2015 dissertation awards, the nominee’s dissertation must have been completed in 2012 or later.

Nomination materials should include:

  1. An abstract of 1,000–2,000 words that a) summarizes the dissertation and b) highlights its broader theoretical and/or applied relevance and importance.
  2. A letter of support from the dissertation advisor (or other faculty member from the institution where the dissertation was completed) that describes a) the significance of the dissertation to the field, b) the implications of the project for future research, and c) the promise of the nominee for future contributions to research or professional practice.
  3. A current curriculum vitae of the nominee.
  4. A list of the names, affiliations, email addresses, telephone numbers, and mailing addresses of the nominee and the nominator, and the date of completion of the dissertation.
